CHBC Publishes 2018 Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in Ports and Shipping Workshop Report
For Immediate Release:
March 12, 2019 – YORBA LINDA, Calif. – Transitioning from combustion to zero emission technology will not only accomplish emission reductions, it will also improve the air quality for communities in close proximity to ports by lowering local criteria pollutants, according to the California Hydrogen Business Council (CHBC) 2018 Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in Ports and Shipping Workshop Report.
“As port operators plan their transition to alternative technologies, careful consideration of that technology’s capability to perform the heavy workloads and duty cycles in the ports will be critical,” said Jeff Serfass, CHBC Executive Director. “Hydrogen and fuel cells have that ability with fast refueling time, longer ranges, and durability compared to the other available zero emission options.” The CHBC will continue its education on hydrogen and fuel cells with its Hydrogen and Fuel Cells for Freight Workshop at ACT Expo in Long Beach on April 23.
The CHBC hosted a two-day workshop at the Port of Los Angeles’ (POLA) Banning’s Landing Community Center on October 9 and 10, 2018 and has released its Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in Ports and Shipping Workshop Report, presenting the findings and conclusions of the workshop. “Ports and shipping are compelling emerging markets for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry,” said Gus Block, Director of Marketing and Corporate Development at Nuvera Fuel Cells, and Co-Chair of CHBC’s Heavy Duty, Clean Ports, Goods Movement Sector Action Group. “Industrial vehicle OEMs are adopting the technology into their product lines because they believe it provides strong value to their customers,” added Block.
The CHBC and ACT News are hosting a webinar on March 14 at 10:00 AM PT that presents the findings of the 2018 Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in Ports and Shipping Workshop Report. Webinar presentations will be provided by:
- Moderator: Emanuel Wagner, Deputy Director, California Hydrogen Business Council
- Cory Shumaker, Development Specialist, California Hydrogen Business Council
- Chris Cannon, Director of Environmental Management, Port of Los Angeles
- Laurence Grand-Clement, Chief Executive Officer, PersEE Innovation

The Port of Long Beach and POLA are accommodating a steady expansion in their operations while reducing emissions, due to the testing and deployment of battery and fuel cell electric equipment through the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP). The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has placed its focus on emissions reduction in maritime, announcing the goal of reducing emissions by at least 50% from 2008 level in the shipping sector by 2050.
