In Memoriam – Bob Rose (1946 – 2018)
The CHBC mourns the loss of a great industry pioneer. In the morning hours of October 17, 2018, Robert Rose died peacefully. His wife, Ann Rose, described his last years as a “three-year strategic match against pancreatic cancer, and he never backed down”.
I have known Bob for many years. He was an important contributor to our country’s and international environmental and energy solutions.
Bob founded and led the U.S. Fuel Cell Council for 11 years, from 1998 to 2009. In that role, he helped shape the fuel cell industry in Washington D.C. and beyond. His knowledge and connections were highly valued, as evidenced by his role as senior advisor for the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association and for DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technical Advisory Committee.
Recognizing his life’s work, he received the Fuel Cell Seminar Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Hydrogen Association as well as a Special Recognition Award from the Department of Energy in 2013.
CHBC’s Director Emeritus Hank Wedaa worked with Bob at the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Hank said that “Bob was an interesting guy and had a unique background and experience in federal government operations. He could be counted on when he spoke what he believed.” Hank recalled that “the last time I was in Washington, Bob and I had lunch together, we discussed fuel cells where they will be going in our time and the impact of using fuel cells nationally.”
During his lifetime, this industry has made great strides. We look forward to continuing to accelerate fuel cell markets and continue his legacy for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable planet.
Bob will be missed dearly.
