CHBC Publishes 2018 Hydrogen and Fuel Cells On-Road Freight Workshop at ACT Expo Report
June 21, 2018 – YORBA LINDA, Calif. – Today, the California Hydrogen Business Council (CHBC) published its Hydrogen and Fuel Cells On-Road Freight Workshop at ACT Expo Report, presenting the conclusions of its April 30, 2018 Workshop held in Long Beach, California. Read the full report here >>
“A significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions is sourced from the medium and heavy duty freight sector. If these applications transition to cleaner, zero-emission transportation solutions, the disadvantaged communities in close proximity to freight operations will see improved air quality and health among residents” said Cory Shumaker, CHBC Development Specialist. “Right now, the most promising zero emission option for the freight sector is hydrogen and fuel cell technology due to its long range, performance over high demand cycles and fast refueling.”
With numerous fuel cell electric truck (FCET) demonstration projects underway, significant attention has been placed on hydrogen and fuel cell technology as a 1:1 replacement for diesel trucks. To accomplish wide scale adoption of FCETs, the industry must continue testing FCETs and aggressively expand the supporting hydrogen fueling infrastructure before high volume manufacturing of FCETs is likely.
The excitement around the technology is emphasized by Anheuser-Busch’s order for 800 Nikola FCETs, as well as Nikola’s partnership with Nel Hydrogen to build the fueling infrastructure to support its FCETs. The economics of the fueling infrastructure are improving with electrolyzer costs dropping around the world and the ability to generate LCFS and RINS credits to make the most affordable renewable hydrogen available yet.
“California has committed its resources by investing in the zero emission transportation and energy technologies of the future,” said Jeff Serfass, CHBC Executive Director. “The Air Resources Board, through multiple sources of funding, is overseeing the allocation of over $1.2 billion to advance the adoption of alternative fuels for freight and public transport applications.”
The CHBC is hosting a webinar on July 11 at 11:00 AM PT that summarizes and presents the findings of the 2018 Hydrogen and Fuel Cells On-Road Freight Workshop at ACT Expo Report. Those interested in the webinar can register here >> A recording of the webinar will be made publicly available.
